Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, commonly known as the "night-flowering jasmine" or "parijat," is a tropical shrub native to South and Southeast Asia, prized for its fragrant, white flowers that bloom in the evening and fall in the early morning. The plant produces clusters of small, tubular flowers with bright orange centers, which emit a strong, sweet fragrance at night, often filling the air with a pleasant scent. Known for its cultural and medicinal significance, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis is frequently associated with various legends in Indian folklore and is used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties. The shrub has dark green, glossy leaves that contrast beautifully with the white flowers and is typically grown as an ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical regions. It prefers well-draining soil, full sun, and moderate watering, with a preference for a warm, humid environment

  1. Light: This plant thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to produce abundant flowers and strong growth. In shadier conditions, it may become leggy and produce fewer flowers.

  2. Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. While it prefers moderate moisture, overwatering can lead to root rot. Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings, and make sure the plant is in a well-draining pot or garden bed to avoid waterlogging.

  3. Humidity: Nyctanthes arbor-tristis thrives in a humid environment, typical of tropical regions. If you're growing it indoors, consider placing the plant on a humidity tray or using a humidifier, especially in dry climates or during winter. Misting the leaves occasionally can also help maintain humidity.

  4. Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures and grows best in zones 10–11. It thrives in temperatures between 75–95°F (24–35°C) and is sensitive to frost. If you're growing it in a colder climate, bring it indoors or grow it in a container that can be moved inside during the winter.

  5. Soil: Plant Nyctanthes arbor-tristis in well-draining, fertile soil. A slightly acidic to neutral pH range is ideal. You can improve drainage by mixing organic matter like compost or leaf litter into the soil.

  6. Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize once a month with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer to encourage strong growth and flowering. Reduce fertilization in the fall and winter when the plant is less active.

  7. Pruning: Prune the plant regularly to remove dead or damaged growth and maintain its shape. Light pruning after flowering can also encourage new growth. Be cautious not to prune too much, as this may reduce the number of blooms. The plant can also be shaped into a small tree or shrub depending on your preference.

  8. Pest Control: Nyctanthes arbor-tristis is relatively pest-resistant, but it can occasionally attract aphids, mealybugs, or spider mites. Regularly inspect the plant for pests, and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

  9. Repotting: If grown in a container, repot the plant every 1-2 years, preferably in the spring. Choose a pot that’s a few inches larger than the current one to allow for continued growth.

With the right care, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis will reward you with its fragrant, night-blooming flowers, adding a tropical touch to your garden or home while offering an intoxicating aroma during the evening hours.
